The Caldeira do Faial, located in the center of the island, is a volcanic collapse crater with unique characteristics, classified as a natural reserve with about 2 kilometers in diameter that was formed through numerous eruptions, interspersed with periods of calm, over the last 400 thousand years.
Caldeira is one of the most important nature preservation sites in the Azores. The high altitude allows a geological interpretation of most of the characteristics of Faial that reveals an important geosite.
The Descent to the Caldeira is a very special trail that takes us to the bottom of a volcano crater. It is one of the most important nature reserves in the Azores and therefore access is limited by the Faial Natural Park, being only possible with the accompaniment of a certified guide.
The trail is quite difficult and technical, especially on the way down. The complete activity lasts about 5 to 6 hours.

Caldeira Descend is something special. Rita communicated with us actively, checking the weather forecast , checking if we had the right shoes. Our tour guide Pedro was very professional. He took care not only of us, but also of the trail. It was an awesome experience. Strongly recommend.
This was my second trip with this company – and it exceeded my expectations 🤗 The view during the hike is mesmerizing – an experience you will not forget! You will hear the sound of birds and the wind and you breath fresh, pure air. Ramiro is super friendly and knowledgable, and you can feel he really enjoys sharing his knowledge with you. The hike is demanding but beautiful, for people who are sensitive towards scratches (from vegetation that is growing along the trail – it is a true jungle-experience 😍)
