Caldeira do Faial is a volcanic depression formed by a collapse crater. The high altitude allows a geological interpretation of most of Faial’s features. And the interior of the Caldeira is one of the most important places to preserve nature in the Azores.
The perimeter of Caldeira is the highest trail on the island, around one of the largest volcanic craters in the Azores. Therefore, it is very exposed to weather conditions. On good weather days you can see practically the entire island and also the neighboring islands. This trail allows us to learn about the native flora. Some species that have adapted to live on this edge exposed to the wind.
