The diverse coastline of the various islands, which can be either high and steep with a rocky seafloor, or plain and sandy, offers a variety of great quality waves which are remarkably consistent. The mild climate and the constant air and water temperatures are ideal for surfing throughout the year, mainly during the winter months.

Besides its natural characteristics, the archipelago is also attractive to surfers because of its uncrowded surf spots and the short distances between them.

You can find good waves on all the islands. Although the point breaks and beach breaks of the islands of Santa Maria and São Miguel have achieved greater international fame, it is on the island of São Jorge, with its fajãs and reef breaks, that longer, tube-shaped waves are more common.
