Considered by the IGTM (International Golf Travel Market) as one of the best and least exploited places in the world to play golf, the Azores combines a beautiful landscape with a mild climate, allowing golfers to play year round. There are two golf courses on the island of São Miguel and one on the island of Terceira, which are all certified and recognized internationally. On the island of São Miguel, the Furnas Golf Course, approximately 40 km from Ponta Delgada, is a par 72 course with 18 holes. The Batalha Golf Course, located on the north coast of the island, only 10 minutes away from Ponta Delgada, is a par 72 course with 27 holes.

The Terceira Golf Course is only one km away from the American Lajes Air Base and less than 15 km away from the city of Angra do Heroísmo. It is a par 72 course with 18 holes. These three golf courses are able to host large events, offering a restaurant/bar, a pro shop, golf carts, a chipping area, putting greens and a driving range.

Useful Information

Playing golf in the Azores has countless attractions. Obstacles such as weather conditions do not exist here. You just need to have the will to play and the passion to welcome nature as your companion.

How to bring your equipment?

You can bring your own equipment. On the other hand, know that golf courses have equipment available for rental.

How to get the courses?

The three courses are located in privileged locations, both in proximity to the airport and in proximity to the closest cities, and have good road access. Between 15 and 50 minutes after landing, you could be staring a round alone or with friends.

Golf can be played in the Azores during the whole year, thanks to the region’s unique weather conditions. Temperature is traditionally mild, and there will be periods of clear skies even during the winter, allowing you to play a round accompanied by luxuriant shades of green.

Where to Start?

The courses are open to players of all levels, with specific areas, according to each player’s level. If you are a beginner or if you want to learn a bit more, there are academies which are ready to help you. In terms of entertainment, a number of programmes are available when you play in group: power play golf, golf debut, putting contest and horse.

What is pasture Golf?

It is a type of golf in expansion in the Azores that is played outside traditional courses. Imagine stroking the ball in the middle of a pasture having cows for spectators and you will get an image of the singularity of this new sport. The rules are the same, but the etiquette is somewhat changed. Playing is open to the whole community (residents and visitors) in an experience that guarantees a contact with pure nature and a lively socialising with local inhabitants.

São Miguel

The Furnas and Batalha Golf Courses offer a total of four rounds adapted to different levels of preference. The courses also offer various facilities and services, such as the rental of equipment, golf academy, shop, bar and restaurant.

Terceira Island has a single golf course, but this is the island of the Archipelago where golfing spirit is more vivid in the minds of the local inhabitants. The Terceira Golf Club inherited the course built by the Americans for the recreation of the military personnel stationed at the Lajes Air Base. Subsequent changes to the design created a stimulating course, where you can enjoy the unique experience of sharing your strokes with the fans of this sport that come from all walks of life.
